Examining a key update to the ISO 22000 and FSSC 22000 standards

In this video, Richard Leathers, Global Quality Lead, discusses a fresh update to the Prerequisite Programs (PRPs) that help and support the ISO 22000 and FSSC 22000 standards.

The newly revised ISO 22002 series, released at the end of July 2025, marks a major advancement in food safety standards across the food, feed and packaging supply chain. These standards are designed to be universally applicable - regardless of business size or sector - offering a harmonised framework for implementing robust food safety practices. It is an update that Campden BRI is proud to have played a pivotal role in shaping, due to its presence and input on the committees.

Here's what's new:

  • ISO 22002-100:2025 – a unified set of Common Prerequisite Programmes (PRPs) applicable to all sectors.
  • Six updated sector-specific PRPs, including:
  • Food Manufacturing (ISO 22002-1)
  • Catering (ISO 22002-2)
  • Packaging (ISO 22002-4)
  • Transport and Storage (ISO 22002-5)
  • Feed and Animal Food Production (ISO 22002-6)
  • Retail and Wholesale (ISO 22002-7)

While previously a food manufacturer’s sole focus would have been their adherence to the PRPs on food manufacturing, with the new ISO 22002-100:2025 standard they also need to consider the implications and required changes for common PRPs across the entire range outlined above.

In this video, Richard highlights some of the key changes in a bit more detail including:

  • Some new practices and definitions relating to ‘cleaning and disinfection’ protocols
  • Key changes to the ‘equipment, maintenance and hygiene design’ principles
  • A new ‘waste and food loss waste management’ requirement
  • New strengths and measures on ‘food fraud and food defence’

These updates reflect a comprehensive review aimed at improving consistency, auditability and integration with ISO 22000 and FSSC 22000 frameworks. The FSSC 22000 framework incorporates these updated ISO Standards and the Additional Requirements document V6.
