The new EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulations will require significant change across the food industry to ensure compliance and continue to supply the EU food market. This course is designed to help businesses get ahead of the requirements and proactively manage the ambitious requirements as well as understanding the regulatory landscape on packaging and packaging waste and know what upcoming implementing legislation to look out for.
Target audience: Anyone within a food business involved in packaging materials, including technical, NPD, procurement, and commercial teams.
The course will be delivered live online over the course of one afternoon (1300 - 1600 hours UK time), participants will be sent log in details for a Microsoft Teams session.

An overview of the new EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulations (Regulation (EU) No 2025/40), including a look at all key aspects of the legislation and looking ahead to upcoming implementing Regulations, as well as a discussion around implications to the UK market.
Course outline:
- Background to the legislation
- Discussion of all key requirements for food businesses (outlined in Articles 5 -11)
- Overview of timelines and exemptions
- Interaction with other legislation in the EU
- Current timelines and guide on the legislation we are waiting for
- Implications for UK market and comparison with UK legislation
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course delegates will be able to:
- Explain the purpose, scope, and key provisions of the new EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (Regulation (EU) 2025/40) and its relevance to food businesses.
- Identify and interpret the core requirements for food businesses outlined in Articles 5–11, including obligations related to recyclability, reuse, and waste reduction.
- Assess the timelines, exemptions, and transitional arrangements applicable to their organisation and begin mapping out required changes.
- Recognise how the PPWR interacts with wider EU legislation and understand which upcoming implementing Regulations to monitor.
- Compare EU requirements with current UK legislation to evaluate potential impacts on supply chains and market access.
